HOW TO FIND ACCESS POINT NAME AND IP ADDRESS OF YOUR NETWORK

FOLLOW THIS STEPS OUTLINE BELOW TO TROUBLESHOOT
  • Have you ever go to someone else’s place and had to figure out the IP address of their wireless network so that you could change it’s settings? Most people setup their wireless networks right out of the box without any configuration and therefore have no idea what the IP address is.
If you’re already connected to the wireless network, then it’s really easy to figure out the IP address of the router. I’ll also explain ways we can get the IP address if you’re not connected to the router.

If you’re connected, go to Start, Run, and type in CMD. Then in the command prompt, type in IPCONFIG /ALL.
    CMD NETWORK SHOT
Scroll down till you get to the heading that has “Wireless Network Connection” in the name. The IP address of the wireless access point is the IP address that is listed for Default Gateway.

Now you can go ahead and type that address into your browser and you should be bought to the configuration page for the wireless router.
If you are not connected to the wireless router and want to find out more information about the device, then you have to use other tools to get the job done.

For example, let’s say you go to your school library and connect to the network via a wired Ethernet port, however, you know there is a wireless connection in the library, but SSID broadcast is turned off for security reasons. It’s basically an easy way to prevent people from connection to your wireless router.
In this type of case, you need a port scanner program to scan the current subnet that you are on to find all devices currently connected to the network, including the wireless router.

First, you should use a tool like NetStumbler to make sure the wireless network actually exists. NetStumbler is a program that can detect wireless networks even if SSID broadcast is turned off. Just down and run it and it’ll give you a list of all the networks in your vicinity. Note that Windows cannot detect networks that have SSID turned off.
    Network Stumbler screenshot
As you can see, it has detected several networks in my area. Now that I know the wireless network exists, we can figure out the IP address by using a port scanner. With either program, you’ll get a list of all the hosts on the current IP range, including the MAC address and IP address.
    network port scanner
If you still can’t figure it out, then you can get hardcore and use a network sniffer and packet analyzer tool like Wireshark. If there is a computer that is connected to the wireless router, you should be able to pick it up even via the wired network connection.
  • First, disconnect the Netgear router from the Linksys Access Point. If the Access Point is using the network 192.168.1.0 and netgear is using the network 192.168.0.0 and if the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, then they will not be able to communicate each other. Try changing the IP address of the Access Point.
After doing this also if you can’t find the Access Point IP Address, then use NEWT Professional. It will show you everything. Follow this link to download: NEWTPRO.EXE
  • I am using Actiontec wireless modem/router combo. On the home page of Actiontec I could see the connection type, IP name, IP address and MAC address of every computers connected to "My network." Are you sure your Dlink router does not give you similar profile? Have you checked the user manual? Don't have one? No problem - get it from this link: http://support.dlink.com/
  • Reset the DLink back to Factory Defaults as per Manual and start afresh

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION
  1. What if I no longer want to hide the folder?

Just delete the locker.bat file when the locker folder is in visible mode. Or you can rename the Locker folder to something else and the next time if you double click, it will create an empty Locker folder.
  2. What if I deleted the .bat file when the Locker folder is not hidden?

You can download the code again, change the password and create the locker.bat file. Now paste that file in the same hierarchy as the Locker folder. It will work as before with the new password.
  3. What if I deleted the .bat file when the Locker folder is hidden?

The contents are still there hidden, so don’t panic! Just download the code again, change the password and create the locker.bat file. Now paste that file in the same hierarchy as the Locker folder is hidden. Double click the .bat file and you can unlock the Locker folder with the new password.

Note: This trick is only to provide Privacy, so that nobody accidentally opens your private folders. It does not provide any ultimate security. Anybody can open locker.bat in any text editor and view the code. As I had mentioned it before try to keep this file in not an obvious place with a name that looks like a system file, so that nobody will have a chance to touch or doubt at this file.

GLO EMPOWERS 100 ONITSHA YOUTHS, DONATES CLASSROOMS AT OFALA FESTIVAL

Globacom has given the people of Onitsha two huge corporate social responsibility projects as part of its sponsorship of the Ofala festival, as Onitsha youths pledge to turn the city into a green community for Glo.

The telecom company trained 100 young entrepreneurs and equipped them with free Commercial Telephone Operation (CTO) facilities comprising of Glo Business lines, handsets, tables, chairs and parasols. The company also commissioned the construction of a block of classrooms at the famous Metropolitan College Onitsha.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony and the presentation of the youth empowerment scheme to the 100 youths, the Obi of Onitsha, HRH Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe thanked Globacom, saying the projects will benefit “our people tremendously. It fits into our strategy of making Onitsha youths more productive.
"It has been a wonderful partnership. Our prayer is that this partnership will continue to grow. Glo will continue to grow from strength to strength. Our youths are the leaders of tomorrow. Any investment in them is a worthwhile one”, the Obi added.

In his remarks at the events in which the Anambra state Governor, Peter Obi was represented by the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Dr. Chinwe Anowai, Mr. Mohamed Jameel said Globacom has “demonstrated again that we are adding value to enhance the lives of our people and bond with the communities we do business with at all levels".
He said the CSR projects Globacom initiated during the Ofala Festival were aimed at building the capacity of the youths and empowering them with the tools they need to become self-employed and captains of their faiths. "We have also introduced Special Ofala Glo SIMs for the exclusive use of Onitsha people. These SIMs come with the cheapest tariff in the market to enable the people to talk more and pay virtually nothing. The SIMs are not time-bound and they come with an unprecedented promotional offer that will give the people of Onitsha the opportunities to win any of our prizes, including a brand new Toyata Corolla car, Ipads, laptops, Blackberry phones and other items at every Ofala Festival sponsored by Globacom.
The Obi of Onitsha made the symbolic presentation of the youth empowerment scheme to two of the beneficiaries while Globacom's Head of Public Sector, Mr. Tunde Amunikoro and his team presented the other beneficiaries with their packages.
In his remarks, the Onitsha Youth Leader, Patrick Aghamba, expressed appreciation to Glo for empowering the youths. “We promise you that we will make Onitsha a Glo community and that everywhere you go will be green in our community,” Aghamba declared.

From the Obi's palace where the youth empowerment project was commissioned in the presence of Globacom's management led by the company's Group Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Mohamed Jameel and members of the Obi's Council of Chiefs, the delegation moved to the Metropolitan College where the Obi performed the ground-breaking of the block of classrooms. It is a modern block comprising four classrooms and an ICT Centre. The 66-year old Metropolitan college is known to have produced many prominent Nigerians including Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu(rtd), former Governor of Old Imo state and Lagos state and Major Gen. Chris Alli ( rtd).

MAKING THE ICT SECTOR WORK

By Adekunle Adekoya

This column last week focused giant strides in IT made by India, a colonial sibling of Nigeria, which launched the world’s cheapest tablet PC at $35, branded Aakash, a fortnight ago.

In that take of this column, I asked whether it was the 12-year difference in independence dates between Nigeria and India that is responsible for the industrialization and advancement gaps between the two nations. This question becomes pertinent because at the pace we are going, and with the leadership we have, we might well need one whole century to get to where India is, assuming the Indians will be sleeping while we play catch-up.

It is this same issue that is making me revisit the presentation on the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Industry in Nigeria Roadmap by Mrs Omobola Johnson, Honourable Minister of Communication Technology at ICT Stakeholders Engagement and Round Table Discussion on the Digital Economy and Information Society in Nigeria about a month ago on 22nd September, 2011 in Lagos.

After the minister’s presentation, there was an interactive session during which many of the stakeholders present contributed and gave suggestions on what further can be done to lift our country onto its rightful plane of participation in the 21st century knowledge society we are in.

Patriotic comments

Without prejudice or bias, I will refer to contributions made by just three of the stakeholders. Mrs. Florence Seriki, MD Omatek Computers at the forum noted that ICT does not appear to be major in the economic agenda of government, and advocated the need for local content and manufacturing policies that will enable and encourage manufacturers to thrive.

Mr Kayode Shobajo, CEO of Hiit, observed that just as other countries are building brands and exporting such brands to the world, nothing stops the Communications and Technology Ministry from pushing Nigerian brands internationally.

The third person I will refer to is Dr. Emmanuel Ekwuem, CEO of Teledom group who averred that there is no software that cannot be produced in Nigeria. Further, he questioned whether Nigerian governments — federal, state and local — use made in Nigeria software.

For me, there is a patriotic streak running through the comments made by these three ICT operators. From my part of the country, there is a saying that the man clamouring for a good society does so not because he alone will benefit. The way things stand, all we get are stories from those who manage our affairs, and if care is not taken, in 2020, we’ll still get more stories why Vision 20-2020 didn’t happen.

What we need

What we need, and urgently too, is action that will enable our OEMs fulfil their desire for this country, which chiefly is that we should stop being a mass consumer of IT products from other lands but producers as well. From production, we protect these local brands by patronising them.

India’s Aakash was the outcome of a conscious, deliberate programme that began two years ago. Since government does not have such in mind, as of now, the least it can do is make things as easy as possible for the private sector investors.

Here the CT Ministry has a pedestal to spring from: just before the elections, President Jonathan issued a buy-Nigeria directive. If the CT Ministry and NITDA can give teeth to that directive in the ICT sector, we’ll all see just how fast things can move, economically speaking, in various sectors of our economy.

HUAWAEI LAUNCHES DUAL SIM ANDROID PHONES IN NIGERIA

By Prince Osuagwu

Nigeria’s burgeoning mobile sector attracted yet another additional investor last week as Huawei Technologies Ltd, announced the introduction of series of mobile devices into the highly competitive Nigerian mobile phone market.

Huawei is regarded as one of the world’s biggest telecom service providers. It is also one of the prominent telecom Infrastructure providers for many telecom operators in Nigeria, playing in the B2B genre of the technology business for many years.

But now the company says its market survey has discovered a Nigeria with rich, untapped mobile market, begging to be explored.

As a way of grabbing its own share of the pie, the company rolled out an array of seven Qwerty plus touch android based smart phones hoping that they would delight Nigerians.

The flagship of the Android phones is the U8520, which is a dual sim smart phone that supports voice in one SIM and data on the other SIM. Unlike other dual-SIM smartphones the Huawei model has one SIM card slot that can work with 3G network, and the other slot compatible with the GSM network.

The new phone have varied features and styles targeted to meet individual needs ranging from full business (Smart phones) phones to full social networking, emails and internet browsing.

Boasting of high pixels, touch screens, hot spot/WiFi connectivity and sleek designs, the phones also run on the Android operating system which is the fastest growing operating system and targets young social networkers and those who have the youthful mind set.

Other models include the G1000+, G6150, G6005, U8650 and the Boulder U8350 smart phone as well as the S7 Slim Tablet. Though these are application-based high end level phones, Huawei promised that they were going to be affordable for the Nigerian customers.

Unveiling the series in Lagos the company’s Managing Director, Terminals, Mr Jacky Lee, promised that in the coming months, Nigerians from all business strata, social and economic status would have a phone that would help them bridge the digital divide without putting a hole in their pockets.

WAFICT 2011

By Prince Osuagwu

The 3rd West African Information & Communications Technology Congress (WAFICT 2011) which held in Lagos last week turned out to be a forum where key stakeholders in the nation’s telecommunications sector made case for the ubiquity of broadband, describing it as the next frontier that will power growth in the sector in the next decade.

For MTN, the sector will be driven by broadband services in the next ten years, while for Airtel, for that growth to happen, the country would need a new policy framework as the existing one pre-dated broadband, with the Communications and Technology Minister, Mrs Omobola Johnson tasking all stakeholders to join hands in advancing ICT in the country.

“The onus is now on the stakeholders to advance ICT development in the country. This is the time for us to work together willingly, with the zeal of overcoming the challenges ahead,” she said. She urged Nigerians to guard all installed telecom equipment and infrastructure jealously in order to make the vision of government workable.

Call for new telecoms policy

Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Airtel Nigeria, Rajan Swaroop then called on the Federal Government to issue a National Policy on Communications (NPC) that incorporates government’s commitment and resolve towards the development of broadband in the country.

The Airtel boss said the present National Policy on Telecommunication (NPT) issued in 2000, which pre-dated the coming of broadband does not incorporate the required framework that can boost broadband uptake and development in the country, and therefore, recommended a review of existing guidelines.

He explained that countries that have recorded success in the area of broadband penetration started with favourable policies complemented by smart regulations. Swaroop referred to broadband successes like Finland, Malaysia, Morocco, Sweden and the US to buttress his point, arguing that strong regulations and right policies enabled successful penetration of broadband in those countries.

Broadband’ll shape market

CEO of MTN Nigeria, Mr Brett Goschen, represented by Corporate Services Executive, Mr. Akinwale Goodluck used the event to express his prediction that the next phase of growth of the Nigerian telecommunications industry will be shaped by stakeholders’ ability to develop broadband services for different categories of the market.

In a paper titled ‘The Future of Telecommunications: Ten Years Ahead,’ the MTN boss gave a lucid illustration of the industry and its milestones in the last ten years, highlighting the penetration of telephony and offering a sneak peek at the industry’s future. According to him, the Nigerian telecommunications sector in the next ten years will be driven by broadband services.

This reality, he said, made this year’s WAFICT Congress’ theme, ‘An Emerging New Frontier: Opportunities and Potentials for Development of broadband Services for Sustainable Growth in West Africa’ very apt.

The theme, according to him, is in line with MTN’s current investment focus and business projections. MTN, he said has a strong desire to develop broadband in Nigeria, not just by making the necessary investment, but also by ensuring accessibility, affordability, availability for the service and raising public awareness about it.

Massive strides in last 10 years

While stressing that the country has recorded massive strides in the area of internet connectivity in the last ten years, he stated that there is still a lot of room for growth.

“Broadband is regarded as very high speed, always-on, allowing quick transfer/exchange of huge amounts of data, video, graphics and other information at bandwidth greater than 512 Kbit/s. Therefore, speed is at the core of broadband, and speed is what the customers need,”

He enumerated some of the socio-economic benefits of broadband penetration as social media inclusion of Nigeria, telemedicine to enhance healthcare delivery, improved agriculture, eGovernment, eEducation, and business efficiencies powered by solutions like the MTN ePresence.

Airtel ready to partner with govt

Further on policy, Airtel’s Rajan Swaroop said Finland declared broadband a legal right in 2009, and entitled every person to have access to 1Mbps Internet Connectivity by 2010 while Malaysia had a singular policy goal to deliver a High Speed Broadband (HSBB) Network to cover major cities and towns in the first phase and boost household penetration to 50% by 2010.

The Airtel CEO, who hinted that his company is committed to partnering with government to attain the next level of growth for broadband, also outlined other strategies that can help develop the telecoms and broadband industry.

He also reiterated his earlier call for the declaration of Telecom Infrastructure as Critical National Infrastructure just as he sought action against multiple taxes and fees by states and local governments.

He also advocated for the pragmatic implementation of policy and regulatory convergence. In this instance, he called for a merger between the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), stating the future is in convergence and it is absolutely necessary for both organizations to come together.

GLO-1 DRAWS HIGH PROFILE VISITORS AT WAFICT 2011

By Aniebiet King

Glo 1, which was at the West African Information Communication and Technology Congress (WAFICIT) exhibition and conference held in Lagos last week drew high profile visitors, including captains of industries and government officials.

Globacom showcased its 9,800km-long cable called Glo 1 as sole telecoms partner of WAFICIT in the submarine cable sector.

At the Glo 1 stand, the Minister for Communication, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, represented by Mrs Ngozi Ogujiofor, a director in the ministry said Globacom through its submarine cable is bridging the gap in broadband infrastructure in the country.

She said that the country is in dire need of backbone that will bring fast and reliable last mile services to Nigerians and Nigerian businesses.

Mr. Folu Aderibigbe, head of Globacom’s Business Enterprise Department, said that Glo 1 is “evidently, the leader in its field”. He added that Globacom decided to put showcased its submarine cable at this year’s WAFICIT because Glo1 fits squarely into the theme of the fair.

“We are placing Glo1 on stage in this very specialised fair to give vendors, stakeholders and end-users a ringside-access to the potentials of the infrastructure” he said .

Aderibigbe explained that Glo 1 has come to solve the backbone and broadband challenges of West Africa, and bring the sub region to par with the developed nations in terms of speed and reliability.

Glo 1 is an undersea cable system connecting Lagos to London with landing stations in 14 African countries and further extending connectivity to all major countries in the world, thus changing the entire telecommunication landscape of West African countries.

They would now be connected to the rest of the world and would be at par with any developed nation due to the enhanced, faster, reliable, cost effective connectivity across the world.

HOW TO UNLOCK ZTE MF-627/628 USB MODEM FOR FREE

After I posted about how to unlock Huawei USB modems, many people have emailed, tweeted and contacted me asking if the Huawei unlocker tool would also work for ZTE USB modems. Of course, the answer is no.
Since ZTE MF-627 and MF-628 broadband modem dongle are commonly provided upon subscribing to an internet connection in one of the leading wireless 3G internet providers in our country, the demand for unlocking these particular modem models is also common.

The software below lets you unlock ZTE USB modems for free. It basically involves re-flashing the modem – which, although it may sound scary, is actually straightforward and easy if the instructions are properly followed. This simple software reflash can only work in Windows XP and the whole process takes around 20-25 miniutes.

Tested working by myself twice already with a MF-627 dongle and a MF-628.

Just download the file from here. It includes the firmware installer/flasher and the instructions in both PDF and DOC versions. Please note that flashing or updating the firmware involves some risk particularly if you don’t follow the instructions properly. It could break your modem dongle and may become unusable! So it is really important to read and understand the instructions carefully and follow them. The software specifically mentions Windows Vista as having potential problems.

After you have unlocked the modem, remember that you have to make few changes in your connection settings each time you change your network provider. You can readily find the proper settings for these providers using Google searches.

How do I unlock them? - If your phone is older BB5, then Dejan Kaljevic, a renowned GSM expert, has released software solution. His solution works for the following phones:
Nokia 6630 RAP3G v2.10E PA
Nokia 6680 RAP3G v2.0E PA
Nokia 6681 RAP3G v2.0E PA
Nokia E60 RAP3G v2.20E PA

Nokia N70 RAP3G v2.20 PA
Nokia N71 RAP3G v2.20 PA
Nokia N90 RAP3G v2.11 PA
Nokia N91 RAP3G v2.20E PA
Nokia N93 RAP3GS v2.0E PA

I have one of those phones. How do I unlock it? -You need Phone(SIM card removed!),
CA-43 or DKU-5 cable(Original Nokia with 13 pins),
and Software

Instructions

  • Connect cable to computer and phone
  • Set proper COM cable (must be, between 1 and 9)
  • Download the software(unlocker), run "install.bat"
  • Open file c:/bb5_unlocker/logs/bb5_unlocker.cfg with a text editor set proper COM port (1-9)
    Run c:/bb5 unlocker/BB5logunlocker.exe
  • Turn phone on. While it is turning on, click READ PHONE. You should see "DONE"
  • Click MAKE LOG, a log will be created. This log is used to generate the codes. Wait until you see "DONE".
  • Log file is in folder LOGS. Start BB5_calc.exe to make the PSW file.
  • Press button SP UNLOCK and unlock your phone.
It didn't work! - Solution courtesy to deal with on gsmhosting.com
- Phone off,
- Connect the cable to phone anc pc (dku5, jaf, serial)
- Open the program
- Power on the phone
- When you see Nokia on the screen, immediately press on Read phone!
Afterwards use BB5 Calc and then SP Unlock

This method has always been a success.
If I power on the phone first and let it start up completely, by inserting the cable phone says enhancement not supported and making log fails.
In this case, reconnect the cable and Press Write backup.
If writing backup succeeded, Just follow the method I wrote above. Tested on many N70.

In Dejan's words:

Be sure that my BB5 logger is installed properly with apropriate FBUS interface (DKU-5) or old clasic FBUS cable connected to standard COM port.

Start loger.
Once connected phone by FBUS interface to PC, press "Read Phone" button. If everything is ok, some data will be readed and displayed, otherwise check your connection, phone, cables, etc.

If logger shows message "SP Data IS corrupted" than you have phone that somebody played with it and destroyed field 308,1. So, you have to fix that field by sending that phone to official NOKIA repair centre!!!

If everything is OK you can press "Make Log" button. LOGER will create backup of field 308,1 and try to make LOG file. In that process, sometimes field 308,1 can be corrupted which can be checked by clicking again on "Read Phone" button.

NOW, if logger shows message "SP Data IS corrupted" than you just have to click several times "WR Backup" and "Read Phone" to check that is your phone is OK.

My phone is hardlocked. What can I do?
If you have already used all 3 attempts to unlock via keypad, but you have unlock codes from your carrier, you can use the program to input the codes.

In "c:\bb5_unlocker\psw" create a text file "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa_BB5.psw" where is "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" enter your phones IMEI
Then in that created file enter in "#pw+bbbbbbbbbbbbbbb+c#" where is "bbbbbbbbbbbbbbb" is the unlock codes and where is "c" enter your logs level number (1-7).
Save the file
Use "SP UNLOCK" function

My phone is a BB5 phone, but not on the list of phones that can be unlocked with Dejan's software. What can I do?
If your phone is not in the list, you can unlock it easily here, or wait for the information to be posted.

WHAT IS A BB5(BASE BAND 5)?

Base Band 5, abbreviated as BB5, is the youngest mobile baseband generation implemented on Nokia mobile phones and the replacement for prior DCT generations.
This generation of Nokia phone basebands uses a new range of chipsets, bus systems and components as well as enhanced security mechanims preventing manipulations on firmware and system configurations. The phones system interface has changed over from previous generations to allow a new flash concept via USB for example.

The system is designed to prevent unlocking of certain key capabilities of the handsets (such as usable network or installation of unsigned operating system[1]), which has not been approved by Nokia or the network. Just like the DCT-4 locking system, the unlocking code is unique to each handset. However, unlike DCT-4, the unlock code is much harder to calculate as each code is randomly assigned to the handset and stored on a special chip.
In May 2007, an engineer named Dejan Kaljevic from Serbia (who earned his fame from the free DCT-3 and DCT-4 unlocking solutions), has released a free program which can unlock many of the older Nokia BB5 phones such as the Nokia 6630, Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681 and the Nokia N70. There were reports for other models include the Nokia E60, Nokia E65, Nokia E70, Nokia N71, Nokia N90, Nokia N91, Nokia N93, but was deemed to be fake, since the unlocker only supports older BB5 models. This is easily done by the end-user through the phone's Pop-port connecting a legacy FBus compatible cable such as DKU-5, to a computer running his unlocking software package. Since then, commercial unlocking solutions have been offered by some others along with successful claims on some newer Nokia BB5 phones as well.

In July 2007, Kaljevic released the instructions and schematics to build a hardware solution for unlocking the Nokia N95. It was based on a CPLD logic IC and worked by manipulating CPU instructions on-the-fly, fooling the phone that a wrong unlock code was accepted like a correct one. However, it is not designed for end-users, since it requires more advanced knowledge in electronics and soldering skills to accomplish.

In August 2008, Kaljevic released a full unlock box for newer BB5 handsets that doesn't require any soldering.

WHAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT SIM LOCK

A SIM lock, network lock or subsidy lock is a capability built into GSM phones by mobile phone manufacturers. Network providers use this capability to restrict the use of these phones to specific countries and network providers. Generally, phones can be locked to accept only SIM cards based on the International Mobile Subscriber Identity, which has elements of:

  • Mobile country code (MCC; e.g., will only work with SIM issued in one country)
  • Mobile network code (MNC; e.g., AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Bell Mobility etc.)
  • Mobile station identification number (MSIN; i.e., only one SIM can be used with the phone)
Additionally, at least Nokia phones can lock group IDs which are used in voice group call service.

In most countries, most mobile phones are shipped with country and/or network provider locks.
Most mobile phones can be unlocked to work with any GSM, such as Nokia or ZTE (in Nigeria), but the phone may still display the original branding and may not support features of the new carrier; besides the locking, phones may also have firmware installed on them which is specific to the network provider. For example, if you have a MTN or Visafone branded phone in Nigeria, it displays the relevant logo and may only support features provided by that network (e.g. MTNOnline!). This firmware is installed by the service provider and is separate from the locking mechanism. Most phones can be unbranded by reflashing a different firmware version, a procedure recommended for advanced users only.

The reason many network providers SIM lock their phones is that they offer phones at a discount to customers in exchange for a contract to pay for the use of the network for a specified time period, usually between one and three years. This business model allows the company to recoup the cost of the phone over the life of the contract. Such discounts are worth up to several thousands of Naira. If the phones were not locked, users might sign a contract with one company, get the discounted phone, then stop paying the monthly bill (thus breaking the contract) and start using the phone on another network or even sell the phone for a profit. SIM locking makes it more difficult to do this.

HOW TO UNLOCK A NOKIA PHONE

Typically when you purchase a cell phone, the company that sold you the phone (ex: MTN,GLO, or AT&T) 'locked' the phone before you bought it, so you can only use it on their network. This means that you can't use your phone if on any other network, even if you change the SIM (which is an abbreviation for Subscriber Identity Module) card. The SIM card is the little piece of plastic that identifies your phone to the cellular network. Changing your SIM card to have your phone work on another network is useful especially if you want to travel to another country and want to buy a pre-paid SIM card so you can have cell phone access without roaming charges. There are services that offer to provide unlocking capabilities for a fee, but you can usually do it yourself for free-which is the perfect price.

STEPS TO UNLOCK YOUR NOKIA PHONE

  • Before trying anything else, contact your service provider and ask for an unlock code. Usually, if you've been a customer of theirs for some time, they will provide you with an unlock code for free. This is, by far, the best way to get your phone unlocked.
  • Download software to generate the unlocking code. Software is available on some websites for free and some pay websites that also offer support if things go wrong. See external links below.
  • Find the Serial number of the cell phone, also known as your IMEI number. This can be done by either removing the back of your cell phone and looking underneath the battery, or simply by typing in *#06# into your cell phone. It should be something like: 010082321439976/07951780736
  • Using the software you have downloaded, enter in your Manufacturer (which is in this case Nokia), and sliding the card out. Put the battery back in and power the phone on.
  • You will see a message "Insert SIM Card". Enter all of the characters you see in your code, including the # symbols. To get a 'p' press * 3 times, to get a '+' press the * key 2 times, to get a 'w' press the * key 4 times. Disregard any spaces in the code.
  • In order to unlock your phone you generally need to enter only one code. Start with the first one. If your phone is not unlocked by typing the first code (MCC+MNC), use code "7" (Multilock)
  • Once you have finished entering a code that works you should see a message that says "SIM is not restricted" or "Restriction off" message depending on your model. If not, try entering another code. Message "Cannot undo restrictions" means the phone is "hard-locked" and cannot be unlocked by code.

TIPS TO UNLOCKING NOKIA PHONE

  • For some phones, such as the E51, you may unlock them simply by updating the phone's firmware using the Nokia PC Suite.
  • Unlocking applies to all cellular phones. The steps provided above work for GSM phones. You CANNOT use the steps above to unlock a CDMA or TDMA phone. To "unlock" a CDMA or TDMA phones is known as reprogramming the phone. For CDMA phones, you need the Master Subsidary Lock or MSL, which you MAY be able to get from your service provider. Please note that you may not be able to get the MSL from your service provider, as it usually is against company policy to give these to customers.
  • Switch off the phone. Hold the keys "3", "*" and "Call" and switch the phone on. Keep the buttons held down till you see the word "Formatting..." on the screen. Make sure that the battery is full charged before you attempt this. This should reset the phone lock code.
  • Also some software is able to unlock CDMA,GSM and other phones to different networks but you must watch for the fraud ones.
  • WARNING

  • Attempting to unlock your phone is done at your own risk. Although unlocking your phone is legal, some cell phone operators might choose to void your warranty should you unlock your phone.
  • Most phones only allow you to try a certain number of unlock tries, Nokia phones have a limit of 5 tries. After that, the phone becomes "hard-locked", meaning it cannot be unlocked without using special equipment.
  • Most of the newer phones will not work with the codes generated by the free unlock programs.
Unlock codes are unique to the phone itself, do not try using another person's unlock code even if it's for the same model.
